Who wants to go to Gujarat for a holiday? After India Shinning, Amitabh Bachchan has hopped onto the Gujarat Tourism brigade and is looking to sell Gujarat to holiday seekers across the nation. Rajasthan is understood, but Gujarat? Anyways, Gujarat needs to make money and Narendra Modi believes that the best way to get some people to come home to Gujarat would be by taking on Amitabh Bachchan as the brand ambassador. For God’s sake, he is not even from Gujarat. Pick someone who glorifies the state, not someone who is popular and apparently believes in its ‘brilliance’.
The fact of the matter is that I don’t like the ad. Compared to other tourism ads that are on television today, this ad is by far forced and not a great representation for those who are seeking a holiday in this western state. The script is boring, Amitabh prods along a desert, talking about beauty and culture that is nowhere in sight. The voice is muffled and is not appealing at all to say the least.
Kerela tourism on the other hand has got it right. No big names, just beauty at its best. The ads have been strategically released at a time when people are basking in the glory of the common wealth games and people who are travelling to India are meant to watch it and get swayed to take a break and make their way to Gujarat from Delhi.
It’s a pity that I can’t find a single nice thing to say about the ad, because it simple does not appeal to me. It’s boring and fails to cut through the clutter of the more interesting ads that are on air today. Gujarat like any other state needs to attract tourists, but the campaign surely misses the mark and fails to impress.
